The Caveat as a Spec
Every published workaround comes with a caveat. Usually something like: “Don’t send this to a client without review,” or “This is a starting point, not a finished output,” or “You still need domain expertise to evaluate this.”
These warnings are typically written as disclaimers — legal protection, expectation management, liability hedging. But read differently, they’re something more useful: they’re the quality standard the product has to clear.
The caveat tells you exactly when the user’s trust breaks down. It tells you what the user needs to be able to evaluate before they’ll use the output professionally. It tells you where the gap is between “impressive” and “reliable.”
What the Caveat Contains
When a domain expert says “don’t send this to your LP without checking the assumptions,” they’re revealing several things at once.
First, they’re telling you the output is close enough to professional use to generate professional scrutiny. They’re not saying “this is garbage” — they’re saying “this is close enough that it could be mistaken for finished work, which would be bad.” That’s actually a strong signal. Outputs that are obviously wrong don’t need warnings. Warnings appear when the output is plausibly right and the user might not check.
Second, they’re identifying what “checked” means. The caveat is always domain-specific. “Check the assumptions” in a pro forma means: verify the cap rate, confirm the rent growth assumptions against market comps, sanity-check the expense ratios. This tells you what expertise is required to use the output responsibly — and therefore what expertise your target user must have for the product to be appropriate for them.
Third, they’re defining the gap between proof and product. The workaround produced output that needed one more step — expert review — before it was professionally usable. That step is the gap the product can narrow, if not eliminate. Maybe better prompting produces more conservative assumptions. Maybe explicit sourcing lets the reviewer scan faster. Maybe structured output makes the review checklist obvious. The caveat tells you where to focus.
The Caveat as a Design Constraint
A product designed for professional use has to do more than produce impressive-looking output. It has to produce output the professional can efficiently review and stand behind. These are different requirements.
Impressive output maximizes the immediate reaction: “this is amazing, look what it did.” Reviewable output maximizes the time from output to confident professional use. These can diverge significantly. An output that looks comprehensive but buries its sources requires more review time than a shorter output that cites every assertion. An output that presents conclusions without showing its work requires more time to verify than one that makes its reasoning explicit.
When the practitioner says “don’t send this without review,” they’re implicitly asking: how much review time does this require? Can I do it in ten minutes, or does it require three hours? If it requires three hours, the friction is substantial and some users won’t bother — they’ll either use the output without checking (bad) or abandon the workflow (also bad).
The product’s job is to make the review as fast as possible without sacrificing completeness. This means: explicit sourcing so the reviewer knows where each assertion came from. Structured output so the review has a natural path. Conservative assumptions with clear labeling so the reviewer knows what to challenge. A format that mirrors how the user would structure a manual review.
None of this appears in the workaround — the workaround was built to produce the output, not to make the output reviewable. That’s the design gap the product fills.
Why This Matters for Trust
Professional tools don’t earn trust by being impressive. They earn trust by being reliable — by producing output that’s consistent enough that professionals can predict how to use it and when to rely on it.
The caveat tells you what the trust gap is. Users know they need to review the output; what they need to trust is that the review process is bounded. If reviewing the output takes unpredictable amounts of time depending on unknown factors, the tool is unreliable even if it’s usually impressive. Professionals need to know: if I use this, how long will the review take?
This is why the design focus for professional tooling should be on reviewability as much as output quality. A tool that produces good output in a format that takes thirty minutes to review beats a tool that produces great output in a format that takes two hours to review — especially when the professional has four deals in the pipeline simultaneously.
Read the caveat. It’s telling you the exact problem the product needs to solve.
