The Competitor as Proof
You’re deep in research mode. You’ve been validating a product idea for weeks. You’ve found the gap, mapped the audience, understood the workflow. You’re almost ready to commit.
Then you find it: a company building in the exact space you’ve been studying. Funded. With a team. With a landing page.
Most builders’ first instinct is deflation. Someone beat me to it.
That instinct is almost always wrong.
A funded competitor doing adjacent work is one of the strongest validation signals you can find. Not because you should copy them — but because their existence proves four things you were still trying to establish:
1. The market is real. Someone with access to capital and advisors looked at this space and decided it was worth betting on. That’s not a coincidence. It’s due diligence done by people with more information than you have from Reddit research.
2. The pain is real. Companies don’t raise money to solve hypothetical problems. If there’s a funded player, there are paying customers somewhere who told an investor “yes, I would pay for this.”
3. The problem is hard enough. Easy problems don’t attract funded solutions. If it were trivially solvable, the incumbent tools would have handled it already. The funded company is proof there’s genuine friction to remove.
4. You’re on the right timeline. Early enough that the category isn’t mature. Late enough that someone else has already done the market education. The ideal moment to enter is when someone else has proven the problem but hasn’t solved your specific angle of it.
The follow-up question matters more than the discovery itself: what exactly are they building, and what are they not building?
The funded competitor you find is never building exactly what you’re building. They made choices. Compromises. They targeted a specific buyer, used a specific data approach, built toward a specific workflow. Everything outside that perimeter is still open.
Sometimes the gap they left is larger than the space they claimed.
Finding a competitor isn’t the end of research. It’s the beginning of the sharper question: given that they exist, where does their approach break down, and for whom?
That question is worth more than a hundred Reddit threads.
