The Expert User
There’s a conventional wisdom in product development that expert users are harder to serve than general users. They have higher standards. They’ll notice every mistake. They won’t tolerate outputs that a non-expert might find impressive.
This is true. It’s also one of the best arguments for building for experts.
What Expert Users Bring
When a professional with deep domain expertise uses a tool, they bring something that general users rarely have: a calibrated mental model of what good looks like.
A first-year analyst can tell you whether a report is complete. An experienced analyst can tell you whether the reasoning is sound, whether the numbers check out, whether the framing matches how the deal is actually structured. They know what the right answer looks like before they see it — or at least they can recognize it when they do.
This is usually described as a problem. The expert user will catch your mistakes. They’ll dismiss outputs that don’t meet professional standards. They won’t grant you the benefit of the doubt.
But look at what this actually means for building a product.
Feedback That’s Actually Useful
When an expert user tells you something is wrong, they can usually tell you how it’s wrong. Not just “this doesn’t look right” but “this valuation approach isn’t standard for this asset class” or “these comps are wrong — you’d use trailing NOI, not forward.” That’s precision feedback. It’s the kind of feedback that makes a product better.
General users often can’t distinguish between a product that’s wrong and a product they don’t understand how to use. They’ll abandon a product without being able to tell you why, or they’ll tell you the wrong reason. Expert users have the vocabulary to be specific. When they tell you what’s broken, you can fix it.
This is the opposite of a problem. It’s the fastest possible path to a product that works.
The Evaluation Problem Is Solved
Building AI-assisted tools for domain-specific tasks creates a problem that’s easy to overlook: how do you know if the output is any good?
For general-purpose tools, you often can’t answer this question directly. You can measure engagement, retention, satisfaction surveys — proxies for quality that don’t directly measure whether the output was correct or useful. If you’re building a tool to help people write better, “better” is hard to define and harder to measure.
For professional domain tools, the evaluation problem is largely solved by your users. The expert user knows what correct output looks like. When they use the tool and evaluate the output against their own expertise, that evaluation is meaningful. They’re not just telling you whether they liked the experience. They’re telling you whether the tool actually did the thing it was supposed to do.
This is free, ongoing, and precise. Most product teams would pay a lot of money to get this kind of feedback signal at scale. You get it automatically when your users know what they’re doing.
The Hiring Bar Signal
Expert users also provide a natural quality filter for distribution. When a tool spreads through a professional community — when it gets recommended by experienced practitioners to other experienced practitioners — that recommendation carries weight.
Professionals are conservative about recommending tools to peers. Their reputation is attached to what they endorse. If a senior analyst recommends a tool to a colleague, that tool has passed a real evaluation: the analyst tried it, evaluated the output against their professional standard, decided it was good enough to stake their credibility on, and then told someone else.
This is a much stronger signal than a general-consumer recommendation, which might mean “I liked this” rather than “this meets professional standards.” Word-of-mouth through professional networks moves slower than mass consumer adoption, but it’s durable. It persists because it’s based on substantive evaluation, not novelty.
The Higher Standard as Filter
There’s one more advantage that rarely gets discussed: the demanding standard that expert users apply is a natural filter against competition.
If your tool does something well enough to earn genuine approval from domain experts, you’ve passed a bar that’s hard to fake. A competitor can build a similar tool, but unless they’ve done the work to get the domain knowledge right — to encode the right heuristics, to handle the edge cases that experts know about, to produce output that meets professional standards — they haven’t crossed the same threshold.
Generic tools often win by being good enough for most users. They succeed in the middle of the market where “adequate” is acceptable. In professional markets where experts are the decision-makers, adequate isn’t a defensible position. The demanding standard that makes expert users harder to impress is the same standard that creates durable distance between tools that have done the work and tools that haven’t.
Building for Experts
None of this means building for expert users is easy. The domain knowledge requirements are real. Getting the output right takes work. The first expert user to tell you your tool is wrong about something important will feel like a failure.
But the structure of the feedback, the clarity of the evaluation signal, and the durability of the reputation effects when you get it right — these are advantages that general-market products rarely have.
The expert user is a demanding partner. They’re also the most useful partner you can have.
